BACKGROUND

The need for an anti-mould surface coating

The tragic death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak in Rochdale in 2020, caused by prolonged exposure to black mould in his family’s home, brought national attention to the devastating health risks associated with mould growth in housing.

His passing not only highlighted the urgent need for action but also exposed the scale of the problem across the UK, particularly in social and rented housing. In response, the government is introducing Awaab’s Law in October this year, which will require landlords to investigate and fix reported damp and mould within strict, legally binding timeframes.

"This shift in legislation reflects a growing recognition that mould is not simply a cosmetic or maintenance issue—it is a serious public health risk."

This shift in legislation reflects a growing recognition that mould is not simply a cosmetic or maintenance issue—it is a serious public health risk. Prolonged exposure to mould spores is linked to respiratory illness, asthma, infections, and in the most vulnerable—such as children and the elderly—even fatal outcomes. For landlords, housing associations, and public bodies, the introduction of Awaab’s Law means there is now both a legal and moral duty to take preventative measures against mould.

Combatting mould in homes, hospitals, workplaces & more

G21 has been developed as a next-generation anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti-mould paint system designed specifically to address this challenge.

Unlike standard decorative paints, G21 actively inhibits mould and bacterial growth on surfaces, providing long-lasting protection and reassurance.

By applying G21 in homes, schools, healthcare environments, and public buildings, landlords and facility managers can not only comply with the new legal requirements but also safeguard the health and wellbeing of their tenants and communities.

The demand for reliable mould-prevention solutions has never been greater. With Awaab’s Law setting strict standards for action and accountability, G21 offers a proven, practical, and cost-effective way to get ahead of compliance obligations while protecting lives.
